What Are The Different Types Of Chihuahuas In Total?

If you’re a regular reader of ours, you’ll know that we’ve already covered Chi history several times over. That’s why we’re not getting into the background of Chihuahuas this time around. Instead, we’re going to jump straight to the point and start listing out the variations of the Chihuahua breed.

Different Kinds Of Chihuahuas Based On Variations

  • Apple Head Chihuahuas
  • Deer Head Chihuahuas
  • Short Coat Chihuahuas
  • Long Coat Chihuahuas
  • Teacup Chihuahuas
  • Fawn Chihuahuas
  • Merle Chihuahuas

If you’re not already aware, allow us to inform you that the American Kennel Club (and other canine organizations) only recognize two Chi types. These are Smooth Coat and Long Coat Chihuahuas. The breed standard, according to AKC, requires Chis to have the hallmark apple-shaped head and a perpendicular snout.

However, what happens if a Chihuahua doesn’t conform to the set breed standard? Does it stop being a Chihuahua? Absolutely Not! Your unique and adorable Chi will continue to be a proud member of the Chihuahua breed. The only difference in canines that don’t meet the standards of canine organizations is that they’re not allowed to compete in dog shows.

Even though there are a total of seven Chihuahua variations – there’s not much difference in what truly matters – the breed temperament. Chihuahuas from all seven variations still retain their larger-than-life personalities, lithe frame, and utter devotion for their family members.

So, if you’re thinking about bringing home a Chi pup or a rescue – first allow us to congratulate you on your stellar choice. Next, we’d like to inform you that unless you’re big on dog show competitions, it doesn’t matter what variation your Chi is – it’s still going to be just as cute!

What Are Some Of The Most Famous Chihuahua Breeds?

We don’t think there’s anything along the lines of an unpopular Chihuahua variation. Nonetheless, certain Chi types are more famous than others. Here’s a few of them.

Additionally, the apple-shaped head being accepted by major canine organizations also lends Apple Head Chihuahuas increase popularity. These little guys (and gals) and longer necks, narrower snouts, a pointy nose, and a flat, almost doe-like shaped head. In fact, lots of Deer Head Chi parents often name their pet ‘Bambi’ in honor of the variation.

What’s more, Deer Heads also resemble deers in their body structure. They have narrow and elongated bodies, paired with delicate and long longs. Finally, experts claim that Deer Head Chihuahuas are the least prone to typical Chihuahua health concerns.

3. Teacup Chihuahuas

You can’t refer to Teacup Chihuahuas as a separate variation because, generally, breeders will often advertise the runt of the litter as a Teacup Chihuahua. There’s no minimum weight standard as far as the Chi breed standard is concerned, so technically, a Chihuahua that weighs only two pounds will still qualify as a Chihuahua (if all other requirements are).

However, it’s not unheard of breeders to select the tiniest Chis around to produce smaller and smaller sized Chis. As kawai as these little furbabies are, the selected cross-breeding also makes them prone to more health concerns later in life.
